Wilson’s Republic X The Creative Step
Our vision is to make West Yorkshire the place to live and work if you’re a creative. We are offering ten free places on The Creative Step programme to ambitious creative businesses who are hungry to shape their business for the future.
What is The Creative Step?
The Creative Step is business support tailored for the creative and cultural sectors. The experience is hands-on, practical, and interactive; you work directly on aspects of your own business while collaborating with others throughout the programme. Through a deep understanding of the needs of creative entrepreneurs, the programme has been carefully structured to support you and your business, whether you are starting out, are planning for your next stage of development or responding to changing market forces. It builds on leading tools and techniques that support creative businesses globally, including aspects of the Creative Enterprise Programme run by Nesta and the British Council.

What people have said about
The Creative Step…
“It really helped me understand and prioritise what needs to be done in my business. The workshop held up a mirror to my business and I enjoyed the opinions from all the other participants.”
“For anyone feeling like themselves or their business needs more direction, confidence, a stronger story, or even a new and diverse network of business contacts – this is the programme. It makes you think about the important steps your business requires and gives you the time and space to consider and act.”
“The beauty of the course [is that] it caters for those who don’t think in a straight line.”
Who should take part in the programme?
If you are a creative or cultural start-up, established agency or practitioner based in West Yorkshire then The Creative Step is for you. Previous participants include artists, photographers, brand specialists, product designers, performers, cultural networks and venues including museums and galleries.
Because the programme is designed to help you develop your business, you need to have a clear challenge or problem to solve. We’ve found that the most helpful challenges are those that are future focussed. For example, a need to diversify, explore new products, services or strategies, improve promotion, sustain a craft, stakeholder engagement, scale your offer. We’d discourage participation if the sole focus is financial planning, recruiting or of a technical or specialist nature.
The Creative Step is suited to your needs if you:
are a micro / small business or organisation in the creative or cultural sectors
have a clear ambition for your business or practice
are prepared to clear diaries to attend all three days in person in Mirfield, West Yorkshire
are up for a small amount of prep between Day 2 and Day 3
open to collaboration with the other participants
happy to share details of the business in the workshop plenary sessions
What are the benefits of taking part?
The programme has been running in Lancashire for six years helping over 100 individuals and organisations in the creative and cultural sectors secure their future pathways.
Feedback from participants found that the programme:
provided a safe space to reflect, review and refresh their business,
focussed on future directions,
·clarified the purpose and activities of their creative enterprise,
put them in control and gave them confidence on what actions are needed to support and develop their business or practice
built confidence using design thinking for creative problem solving
supported peer-to-peer learning.
On completion of The Creative Step, you will receive materials used in the workshops to allow you to use them in the future and to share them with your team.

THE CREATIVE STEP IN DETAIL
Designed to suit the creative mindset the programme is built around a design thinking toolkit and, being activity-based, this means that the tools practiced in the workshops can be easily applied and shared in the regular workplace.
-
This day explores what drives you personally, your business values and connects these to your business purpose and future aspirations. This provides a solid foundation for guiding your business and communicating confidently.
-
Here you explore stakeholders who can affect the success of your business with a particular focus on customers. You will also be introduced to practical approaches to customer research and create a plan to gather meaningful data to strengthen your business offer.
-
On the final day the cohort share the learning from their research then delve into the core components of their individual businesses. You will then identify actions to take forward, prioritise these and create a high-level action plan to help you make the necessary changes to support your business.
-
It is important that you can attend all three days of the programme as the outputs of each session feed into the next to ensure you get the most out of the programme.
There is light ‘homework’ between Day 2 and Day 3 to allow the group to move at a pace while allowing for experimentation and feedback on the use of the tools and techniques. -
