Artist
Benaiah Matheson (b. 1985, Huddersfield, UK) is a multidisciplinary artist with roots in both Huddersfield, England, and Carriacou, Grenada. His practice, Town Island, is a long-term artistic framework that explores cultural connections across Carriacou diasporas through oral history and the use of meaningful materials.
His recent exhibitions include the 60th Venice Biennale (2024, Grenada Pavilion), Somerset House (2025), and Yorkshire Contemporary (2025). He is also Director of Diaspora Engagement & Cultural Partnerships at the Carriacou Historical Society and Museum, where he contributes to heritage recovery following the devastation of Hurricane Beryl in 2024.
A strand of his wider practice is 1000 Flags — an evolving artwork developed through workshops with schools, collectives, and cultural institutions. Through storytelling, gesture, and flag-making, participants create works that represent themselves and their values. Each flag contributes to a living archive of self-representation and community expression.
